Occasionally I get ideas for original fiction as well as fanfics. This is one I just had last night:

The apocalypse has come. After five thousand years, the plane of Faerie has once again contacted Earth, and the Shining Ones have entered the world.

From ghosties and ghoulies and long-legged beasties and things that go bump in the night...

The Sidhe ride forth in the Wild Hunt, slaughtering mortals in their path. Gibbering redcaps and kobolds lurk in the shadows. Parents wake to find their children carried of by the fae and replaced with vile changelings.

These are not modern fairy tales of true love and pixie dust. This is the old magic, of blood and bone, starlight and cold-forged iron. The elves are figures not of reverence, but of bone-chilling terror.

Up the airy mountain, down the rushy glen, we dare not go a-hunting...

Headless horsemen haunt lonely country roads, while sirens, selkies, and kelpies lure the innocent to watery graves. Cities are overrun with rats driven berserk by elfin pipers.

Worst of all are the Star People, the Shining Ones, who come in a blaze of light and leave only ice and snow in their wake.

The elves are back to reclaim the world, and the world is helpless before them.

So... Thoughts? Ideas? Ways to make it better? I'll admit the "going back to the really old stories where fairies are evil" thing isn't really that original anymore, but I like the idea for a supernatural post-apocalyptic thing. Give the demons and zombies a rest, you know?

carried off by the Fae.

As for original, any setting is probably similar to something already out there these days. The trick is to take the conventions and give them a twist. Since it's hard to make an audience sit up and say "I've never seen that before", aim for "I've never seen it done that way before."

*wince* Sorry, I just copypasted it from our conversation, and like I said I typed it really fast.

Good point. Well, using fey for a supernatural horror thing, especially post-apocalyptic, is probably a start there, actually - usually it's zombies or vampires or demons. Or all three.

*waves* Hi! It's Kazie. Yush. I stumbled into your journal because I'm being odd today and I'm randomly adding fellow Econtra muns into my f-list. Add me? *puppy eyes*

Also. I approve this idea! Evil fairies yum. I also have an idea for a novel, it's more on the whole heaven vs hell thing though.

*adds* Hi Kazie!

That's always good, too. Honestly, this thing was sort of inspired by a splatbook for a roleplaying game about post-apocalyptic settings.

Well if you'd like to explore the idea some more, I'll be happy to brainstorm with you and stuff. :D
